Tas Strength and Fitness Challenge
The "Tasmanian Strength and Fitness Challenge" was held on the 26th of April 2006 to raise money for the cancer council, the event was held to inspire people to compete in a fun event, train hard and just appreciate lifting for all its glory!
We had 16 entrants in total, with a few extras bravely jumping in for the car pull.
The event was basically a bodyweight challenge - that is every competitor had to squat, bench press and deadlift their weight as many times as they could. The
As people got tired the begun to rest, however a 5 second "break' was the longest anyone was allowed. Of course a break was only standing upright on the squats and lockout on the bench, so after many many reps, it wasn't much of a break at all.
Any more than 5 seconds meant disqualification.
We had some big guys, small guys and many in between. This was exactly what we had hoped for, as we wanted as many people as possible to enter.
Basically we were blown away by some of the entrants, and the amount they pushed themselves, the winner?
A 46 year old guy named Paul Tucker (in the mens) who trains with kettle bells, a surprise to us, but not so those who appreciate the benefits of the great equipment commonly used in Eastern Europe.
Amazingly, he hadn't modified his training one iota for this event yet squatted his weight 75 times, while deadlifting his weight 112 times!!!
You can learn more about Paul and kettlebell training on his site:
The female winner was Camilla Fogagnolo who lifted half her bodyweight a total of 240 times. Camilla is an amazing athlete, having represented Australia in weightlifting and Judo.
It's worth noting that all lifts were to competition standard (apart from the bench which wasn't pause and press, rather touch and go). If squats weren't to at least parallel they were not counted, and deadlifts had to be with full extension.
The best thing about the event was that it made all three news reports here in Tasmania (WIN, Southern Cross and ABC), two of them featured an interview of yours truly and some of the winners. We also had two good newspaper articles dedicated to the event - which you can read underneath.
The final event of the day was a test of extreme strength, the car pull. 8 people began the event, the final between two of Australia’s most powerful men: David Park vs Clayton Long. It was climatic all the way, with Clayton edging the win by centimetres.
